'Iran will deliver telling blow to global powers on Feb. 11'
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad says the nation will deliver a harsh blow to the "global arrogance" on this year's anniversary of the Islamic Revolution. "The Islamic Revolution opened a window to liberty for the human race, which was trapped in the dead ends of materialism," Ahmadinejad said during a cabinet meeting on Sunday. "If the Islamic Revolution had not occurred, liberalism and Marxism would have crushed all human dignity in their power-seeking and money-grubbing claws. Nothing would have remained of human and spiritual principles," he added.
PM receives Berlusconi: Close friend of Israel
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held a reception for Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi at his office in Jerusalem. Berlusconi, who is visiting Israel with eight of his cabinet ministers, said, "There is great passion to bring Israel into the European Union as long as I am an active player." Netanyahu said in response, that Italy is a close friend of Israel.
Iraq says can be top global oil producer in 6-7 yrs
Iraqi Oil Minister Hussain al-Shahristani said on Saturday he expected Iraq to become the world's top oil producer in six to seven years, and that OPEC should take into account Iraq's need to rebuild its economy. Emerging from the shadow of war and keen to generate petrodollars to rebuild, Baghdad looks set to lift capacity to 12 million barrels per day in six or seven years, strengthening its hand for future negotiations on output quotas with OPEC. "We can't find a reason to prevent Iraqi production becoming higher than any other OPEC state or even states outside OPEC. We expect that to happen in the next six to seven years with coordination and agreement with other OPEC producers," he said.
Russia's Lukoil signs final deal with Iraq to develop supergiant oil field
A consortium led by Russia's energy giant Lukoil signed on Sunday the final contract with the Iraqi Oil Ministry to develop the West Qurna Phase 2 oil field in southern Iraq. Lukoil, partnered with Norway's Statoil ASA, will develop the oilfield to produce 1.8 million barrels per day (bpd) from its proven reserves of 12.88 billion barrels of oil. West Qurna Phase 2 is one of the world's biggest undeveloped oil fields.- Estimated at 115 billion barrels, Iraq holds the world's third largest proven oil reserves, only after Saudi Arabia and Iran.
Britain coldest January in 23 years
Britain had its coldest January for more than 20 years. It was also drier and sunnier than average, according to climatologist Philip Eden. He said: "Although the second half of the month was unremarkable temperature-wise, the severity of the cold period during the first half was such that January turned out to be the coldest since 1987, and the ninth coldest in the last 100 years.
Iraqi police: Female suicide bomber kills 46
A female suicide bomber walking among Shiite pilgrims in Baghdad detonated an explosives belt on Monday, killing at least 46 people and wounding more than 122, officials said.

Deputy FM: Israel-U.S. relations have never been better
Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon declared Monday that Israel's relations with the United States have "never been better", telling delegates to the Herzliya Conference that the allies' ties go well beyond dealing with the Middle East conflict. "What makes the U.S. special is the fact that it has maintained its good relations with Israel over the years," Ayalon declared in his address on the second day of the annual conference. "Its support is not based on the financial pockets of the Arab states.

US raises stakes on Iran by sending in ships and missiles
Tension between the US and Iran heightened dramatically today with the disclosure that Barack Obama is deploying a missile shield to protect American allies in the Gulf from attack by Tehran. The US is dispatching Patriot defensive missiles to four countries – Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Kuwait – and keeping two ships in the Gulf capable of shooting down Iranian missiles. Obama to skip EU-US summit in Madrid
US President Barack Obama is likely to skip this year's EU-US summit to be held by the Spanish presidency in Madrid, as he is focusing more on the domestic agenda, according to press reports. Russian protest inspired by EU neighbours
The leader of the largest anti-government protest in Russia for almost a decade has said that his region's proximity to EU countries is producing an appetite for political change. Between 7,000 and 12,000 people held a rally in Kaliningrad on Saturday (30 January) in a demonstration that had initially targeted local tax hikes but which ended in calls for more democracy and for Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin to resign.
Libya strikes billion-dollar Russian arms deal
Libya has struck a deal to buy Russian arms worth almost two billion dollars, Russian news agencies quoted Prime Minister Vladimir Putin as saying Saturday. "Yesterday (Friday), a contract worth 1.3 billion euros (1.8 billion dollars) was signed. It does not only involve firearms", Putin was quoted as saying by Ria Novosti and Interfax. Putin was speaking following a meeting with the head of the Izhmash factory, which manufactures Kalashnikov rifles.
Obama's $3.8 trillion budget heading to Congress
President Barack Obama's proposed budget predicts the national deficit will crest at a record-breaking almost $1.6 trillion in the current fiscal year, then start to recede in 2011 to just below $1.3 trillion.
