John’s Baptism And The Holy Spirit
Q. In light of your teaching that the moment we receive and believe the Gospel we are sealed with the Holy Spirit, how do you treat Acts 19:2 “He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost.”
A. First of all, let’s understand that this is not my teaching. It’s Paul’s, and it comes fromEphesians 1:13-14;
And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of his glory.
As for your question, lets look at the entire passage to get the whole story.
While Apollos was at Corinth, Paul took the road through the interior and arrived at Ephesus. There he found some disciples and asked them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?”
They answered, “No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.”
So Paul asked, “Then what baptism did you receive?”
“John’s baptism,” they replied.
Paul said, “John’s baptism was a baptism of repentance. He told the people to believe in the one coming after him, that is, in Jesus.” On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. When Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied. There were about twelve men in all.(Acts 19:1-7)
Notice that these disciples had only received John’s baptism, which was a call to repent and prepare for the coming Messiah. Although they believed John’s message, they weren’t born again. As soon as Paul baptized them in the name of Jesus signifying that they were saved, they received the Holy Spirit.
