Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood welcomes US talks, responds to Secretary of State Clinton's offer of dialogue
Muslim Brotherhood supporter Photo: Reuters Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood is willing to hold talks with the United States, a spokesman said Friday, taking up an offer of dialogue seen as an implicit recognition by Washington that the group will likely hold significant political power in Egypt's post-Hosni Mubarak era. US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said a day earlier that the Obama administration is reaching out to the Muslim Brotherhood in a "limited" effort to build ties and promote democratic principles. "We welcome dialogue with America to remove any misunderstandings and bridge gaps," Brotherhood spokesman Mohammed Ghozlan told The Associated Press on Friday in response to Clinton's comments. Clinton: Syria running out of time to reform
Photo: AFP Syria is running out of time to reform and will face more organized resistance if it does not, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said on Friday. Speaking at a news conference in Lithuania, she also said she was disheartened by reports of fresh violence in recent days and that the Syrian government's decision to allow one opposition meeting in Damascus was not sufficient. Asked about the apparent contradiction between permitting the meeting while pursuing a tank offensive in the north, Clinton said: "It doesn't appear that there's a coherent and consistent message coming from Syria. "They must begin a genuine transition to democracy and allowing one meeting of the opposition in Damascus is not sufficient action toward achieving that goal," Clinton, standing beside Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite, told reporters. UN, US pressure Lebanon to make arrest over Hariri assassination
The United Nations, the United States and an international court yesterday all urged Lebanon's government to act on arrest warrants in the murder of former prime minister Rafiq Hariri. The UN-sponsored Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL) issued the warrants on Thursday against four Lebanese men - two of them confirmed Hizbollah members - implicated in the 2005 assassination. Lebanon's prosecutor said yesterday that he is taking steps to comply. "The legal measures to execute the arrest warrants handed over by the international tribunal delegation took their course towards implementation," prosecutor Saeed Mirza was quoted as telling Lebanon's National New Agency. "The men who have done the most for God in this world have been early on their knees. He who fritters away the early morning, its opportunity and freshness, in other pursuits than seeking God will make poor headway seeking Him the rest of the day. If God is not first in our thoughts and efforts in the morning, He will be in the last place the remainder of the day." - E. M. Bounds
