Morgan Stanley: US, Europe 'Dangerously Close to Recession'
The U.S. and Europe are “dangerously close to recession,” Morgan Stanley analysts including Chetan Ahya said in the note. “Recent policy errors, especially Europe’s slow and insufficient response to the sovereign crisis and the drama around lifting the U.S. debt ceiling, have weighed down on financial markets and eroded business and consumer confidence.”  

New Chinese stealth jet starts talk of Russian help
Similarities between a new Chinese fighter jet and a prototype Russian plane have brought suggestions that Moscow may be quietly helping Beijing compete with the world's military powers. Experts say the fifth-generation J-20 fighter, which made its maiden flight in January during a visit of the U.S. defense secretary, could have its origins in the Mikoyan 1.44 stealth jet that never made it to the production line.  

Biden: US-China relations crucial to economic stability
US Vice-President Joe Biden has told his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping that global economic stability rests on the US and China finding common ground. Speaking on the first day of an official visit to China, Mr Biden said a close relationship with China was of the "utmost importance". The trip comes amid mounting tension between the two over America's debt.  

Hugo Chavez to nationalise Venezuela's gold industry
Hugo Chavez has announced that he will nationalise Venezuela's gold industry to boost the country's reserves. "The area is run by the mafia," the president said on state TV. "We're going to nationalise gold. We can't keep allowing them to take it away."  

Van Rompuy tipped to chair new 'economic government'
Twice-yearly meetings of the leaders of the 17 single currency states are to become the "cornerstone" of the new economic government of the eurozone, the leaders of France and Germany have said. In a five-page letter to European Council President Herman Van Rompuy following their meeting on Tuesday (16 August) in Paris, Nicolas Sarkozy and Angela Merkel say the summits "will take place twice a year and, if necessary, extraordinary meetings will be called."  

Arab countries back emergency UN session on Syria
The UN Human Rights Council will hold an emergency session on Monday on the escalating violence in Syria after 24 countries including four Arab members - Jordan, Kuwait, Qatar and Saudi Arabia - backed the European Union initiative, a UN statement said. The announcement came shortly after Syrian President Bashar Assad told UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon that military and police operations against pro-democracy protesters had stopped, the United Nations said on Wednesday.

At least 5 dead, dozens hurt in terror attacks near Eilat
At least five people were reported dead and dozens injured in a three-stage terrorist attack along Israel’s border with Egypt on Thursday, which began when terrorists opened fire at an Egged bus traveling on Road 12 near Eilat. The casualties were evacuated to Yoseftal Hospital in Eilat. A number of soldiers were among the casualties.  

Pope demands greater ethics in economic policy
Pope Benedict XVI denounced the profit-at-all-cost mentality that he says is behind Europe's current economic crisis as he arrived in hard-hit Spain on Thursday, and said morals and ethics must play a greater role in formulating economic policy in the future.  

US Inquiry Eyes S&P Ratings of Mortgages
The Justice Department is investigating whether the nation’s largest credit ratings agency, Standard & Poor’s, improperly rated dozens of mortgage securities in the years leading up to the financial crisis, according to two people interviewed by the government and another briefed on such interviews.  

NASA on comet Elenin: It won’t kill us all
“Any approximate alignments of comet Elenin with other celestial bodies are meaningless, and the comet will not encounter any dark bodies that could perturb its orbit, nor will it influence us in any way here on Earth,” said NASA scientist Don Yeomans in a Q&A released this week.

The United States has already tied its yearly record for billion-dollar weather disasters and the cumulative tab from floods, tornadoes and heat waves has hit $35 billion, the National Weather Service said Wednesday. And it's only August, with the bulk of the hurricane season still ahead.

China must punish US for Taiwan arm sales with 'financial weapon'
Now is the time for China to use its "financial weapon" to teach the United States a lesson if it moves forward with a plan to sale arms to Taiwan. In fact, China has never wanted to use its holdings of U.S. debt as a weapon. It is the United States that is forcing it to do so.
