Up to $6 bil. in natural gas found
The Canadian Bontan Oil and Gas Company, which has been exploring for natural gas off the coast of Israel, announced Tuesday that it had found prospective resources of up to 6 trillion cubic feet of natural gas in Mira and Sarah Prospects off the country's coast. As defined on the company's Web site, prospective resources are “those quantities of petroleum estimated, as of a given date, to be potentially recoverable from undiscovered accumulations by application of future development projects. “ The two finds could be worth upwards of US $6 billion.  

Obama aide says Iran may lash out at Israel
President Barack Obama's national security adviser is citing a heightened risk that Iran will respond to growing pressure over its nuclear program by stoking violence against Israel. The adviser, retired Marine Gen. James Jones, said history shows that when regimes are feeling pressure they can lash out through surrogates. He said that in Iran's case that would mean facilitating attacks on Israel through Hezbollah in Lebanon and Hamas in Gaza. Iran helps arm Hezbollah and Hamas.  

Record Brazil, Argentine Soy Crop Hurt by Disease
Soybean fungi are spreading across Brazil and Argentina, the world’s second- and third-largest producers, threatening record crops as demand gains. Argentine farmers confront an “unprecedented” outbreak of Frogeye Leaf Spot, which can cut yields by 12 percent and has reached the heart of the Pampas farmlands, said agronomist Luciano Ascheri.  

Erdogan slams Sarkozy over Turkey's EU bid
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan criticized French President Nicolas Sarkozy of his opposition to Turkey's bid to join the European Union (EU) in his interview with Euronews channel on Sunday. -"They are trying to corner Turkey with conditions that do not exist in the acquis communautaire. This is really wrong," he (Erdogan) said.  

Report: N. Korea resumes military aid to Syria
The Pyongyang-Damascus axis is back in order. For the first time since the Syrian reactor was bombed in September 2007, North Korea has renewed its supply of sensitive military technology to Damascus, according to a report Tuesday in Japanese business newspaper, Nikkei.  

Jordan king urges more peace efforts from Obama
Barack Obama telephoned Jordan's King Abdullah II to discuss efforts to "overcome obstacles" facing the launch of Palestinian-Israeli peace talks, the palace said.  

Number of hungry quadruples in south Sudan:
The number of hungry people in southern Sudan has quadrupled since last August to some 4.3 million because of conflict and drought, the UN emergency food agency said Tuesday.

One in 10 workers across Europe’s core euro currency area is now unemployed, according to new European Union data issued on Friday that showed Spain bearing the brunt of a jobless recovery.  

Netanyahu risks Muslim wrath over Jerusalem holy site
Will Netanyahu use a court decision to forgo a plan to alter the Mughrabi Gate? King Abdullah of Jordan is distancing himself from Israel's prime minister because of the violation of the status quo in East Jerusalem. The Turkish prime minister, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, is waiting in the corner for the slightest provocation against Islamic holy places by the Israeli government. The only trouble Benjamin Netanyahu is still missing is that of the Mughrabi Gate, at the entrance to the Temple Mount/Noble Sanctuary compound.  

Hamas: Shalit talks collapsed, Netanyahu to blame
Prisoner swap negotiations over the release of abducted Israel Defense Forces soldier Gilad Shalit have collapsed due to policies set by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Hamas official Mahmoud Zahar said Tuesday in an interview with the BBC. The talks, aimed at seeing Shalit freed after three years of captivity, reached a standstill earlier this month despite repeated reports of progress. Zahar told the BBC that the sides have taken a "step backward" and that the process has "failed"  

Neo-Pagans Get Worship Circle at Air Force Academy
Witches, Druids and pagans rejoice! The Air Force Academy in Colorado is about to recognize its first Wiccan prayer circle, a Stonehenge on the Rockies that will serve as an outdoor place of worship for the academy's neo-pagans. Wiccan cadets and officers on the Colorado Springs base have been convening for over a decade, but the school will officially dedicate a newly built circle of stones on about March 10, putting the outdoor sanctuary on an equal footing with the Protestant, Catholic, Jewish and Buddhist chapels on the base.  

'Islamic Jihad claims it sent bomb-laden barrels to Israeli beaches'
Islamic Jihad is claiming responsibility for sending two large explosive charges contained in barrels which washed ashore on beaches in Ashkelon and Ashdod, Israeli media outlets reported on Monday. The first barrel was discovered in Ashkelon on Monday morning, while the second container was spotted as it washed ashore on a beach in Ashdod.  

Turkey envoy requests recall after Israeli 'insult'
Turkey's ambassador to Israel has asked his superiors in Ankara to transfer him to a new posting after he was treated with deliberate disrespect by Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon, Army Radio reported on Tuesday. Ayalon in January issued a formal apology to Ahmet Oguz Celikkol, who earlier in the month was summoned to explain a Turkish broadcast of dramatized abuses of Palestinians by Israeli troops, which caused offense in Israel.  

Mitchell to Abbas: No more excuses, renew Mideast talks
United States special Mideast envoy George Mitchell has urged Europe to step up pressure on Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in an attempt to kick-start stalled peace talks with Israel, the London-based A-Sharq-al-Awsat reported on Tuesday. "The time has come to stop finding excuses for avoiding a return to the negotiating table," the London paper quoted Mitchell as saying, citing French officials.  

Obama budget: Record spending, record deficit
Spelling out painful priorities, President Barack Obama urged Congress on Monday to quickly approve a huge new shot of spending for recession relief and job creation, part of a record $3.8 trillion budget that would boost the deficit beyond any in the nation's history while only slowly beginning to put Americans back to work.  

Haiti earthquake: voodoo high priest claims aid monopolised by Christians
Max Beauvoir, Haiti's "supreme master" of voodoo, alleged his faith's opponents had deliberately prevented much-needed help from reaching followers of the religion, which blends the traditional beliefs of West African slaves with Roman Catholicism. "The evangelicals are in control and they take everything for themselves," he claimed. "They have the advantage that they control the airport where everything is stuck. They take everything they get to their own people and that's a shame.  

Air passengers who refuse a full body scan to be barred from their flights
Air passengers who refuse to submit to controversial full body scans will be barred from boarding their flights. The technology - which has been strongly condemned by civil liberties campaigners - began operating at Heathrow and Manchester airports yesterday. Birmingham will follow suit later this month before the anti-terror devices are rolled out nationally.  

Iran's Mousavi says he will continue fight for reform
Iran's opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi has said he will continue his struggle against the government. In a statement posted on his website, Mr Mousavi said the 1979 Islamic Revolution had failed to achieve most of its goals. He said politically motivated arrests of protesters were illegal and that the constitution should be changed to secure people's rights.  

Pope Benedict attacks government over Equality Bill
The Pope has urged Catholic bishops in England and Wales to fight the UK's Equality Bill with "missionary zeal". Pope Benedict XVI said the legislation "violates natural law". Supporters of the law see this as a wish to keep a ban on gay people in Church positions. Gay rights campaigners condemned his comments, saying equality had to apply to everyone, and Labour MEP Stephen Hughes said he was appalled.  

China warns Obama not to meet Dalai Lama
China has warned that ties with the US would be undermined if US President Barack Obama met the Dalai Lama. The US has indicated that Mr Obama intends to meet the Tibetan spiritual leader in Washington later this month, but no date has been confirmed. Communist Party official Zhu Weiqun said such a meeting would "threaten trust and co-operation" between Beijing and Washington.  

US anti-missile test of 'Iran or N Korea' attack fails
A US missile defence test designed to shoot down long-range missiles was aborted when the radar system failed. Rick Lehner, a Missile Defense Agency spokesman, said the target missile represented the type of technology that North Korea or Iran might develop. The target was launched from the Marshall Islands in the Pacific and the interceptor missile from California.  

Merkel clashes with Switzerland over 'stolen' bank data
Germany's centre-right government is considering paying an informant €2.5 million for data on alleged tax evaders in Switzerland, a move the Alpine country slammed as illegal. "Our goal is to get possession of this data, if it is relevant," German Chancellor Angela Merkel said at a press conference on Monday (1 February), after debating the issue in her cabinet over the week-end, Spiegel Online reports.
