Praying in the Holy Ghost

It was Apostle Jude, brother of James, both half-brothers of Jesus Christ, that plainly instructed us to pray in the Holy Ghost. He wrote by the inspiration of the Spirit Himself, “But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost, Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.” (Jude 1:20-21) The Father sent the Holy Spirit to be our helper in this challenging Christian life. The Holy Spirit is a person, fully distinct, and always acting for the Father and the Son to complete the glorious work of Redemption in our lives. Jesus told His disciples before He ascended to “tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.” (Luke 24:49)

Everything about this Christian life is indeed a challenge. The flesh is weak, and we cannot know the great truths of the Holy Spirit unless we have the sovereign teacher that the Son of God promised us. Apostle Paul said these words perfectly, “But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man. For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.” (1 Corinthians 2:14-16) The Holy Ghost is the “mind of Christ” in us making known to us all the marvels of His wisdom.
Understanding who the Holy Spirit is and what He was sent to accomplish in us brings me to discuss, “Praying in the Holy Ghost.” Lately I have had a deeper yearning than ever to be “a victorious prayer intercessor.” Our world needs men and women that can storm the gates of Heaven in great travail. Elias (Elijah) was described by James as a perfect example of an intercessor. “Elias was a man subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain: and it rained not on the earth by the space of three years and six months. And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth brought forth her fruit.” (James 5:17-18) He was an ordinary person with passions of the flesh just like all of us. Yet he prayed until He got answers. How much more should we in the new covenant be able to pray until we get answers.

The Holy Ghost has been given to us for this very purpose. Prayer is the toughest spiritual work in the Kingdom. There is a barrage of spirits, every one of them equipped with Satan’s tools, to hinder and stop effective praying. The only way you will be able to be a great prayer warrior is to learn complete dependency on the Holy Spirit. Between each of us on earth and our Father in heaven is the kingdom of Satan. He is the “prince of the power of the air.” Apostle Paul to the Ephesians said, “For we wrestle (hand-to-hand combat) not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.” (Ephesians 6:12)
After Paul described the tools of our armor, he then stated, “Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;” (Ephesians 6:18) Note those words, “prayer and supplication in the Spirit”. Your spirit is a whisper of the Father and the Holy Ghost has come to sit upon the throne of your heart and by your spirit to reach back into the heavens by prayer. The Holy Spirit has no way to intercede to God except your spirit and your lips. Intercession for the church, the Body of Christ, is one of His primary offices but you are His temple and His place of manifestation. He must pray through you or His great office is hindered. If you quench Him, He will find someone that will yield to Him.

The Holy Spirit knows our infirmities and weaknesses. Apostle Paul voiced this truth to the church at Rome, the very seat of the anti-Christ. “Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.” (Romans 8:26-27)

You must learn how to surrender to the awesome powers of the Holy Ghost in prayer. This Apostle said, “I will pray with the Spirit and I pray with the understanding” (I Corinthians 14:15). Notice he said, “I will pray with the Spirit.” It is a fellowship of prayer between the Holy Ghost and a saint of God. Please believe with me for the Spirit to teach us how to “Pray in the Holy Ghost”. Great prayer and great victory will result.
