The Family Line of Redemption  11:27 This is the genealogy of Terah: Terah begot Abram. Beginning in Genesis 11:10, we are given the genealogy of Shem, one of the three sons of Noah, which leads us to Abram, whose name will one day be changed to Abraham, and become the father of the Jewish nation. The reason for this specific family history is vital to the understanding of the redemptive purpose of God and the primary theme of the entire Bible. God’s theme of redemption begins immediately following the fall. Genesis 3:15 records the promise of God that there will come one day a person or “seed” from the human race that will destroy Satan. God’s pronounced curse upon Satan declared that though Satan will “bruise the heel” of this coming “seed of Eve,” the seed will then bruise or crush the head of Satan. This seed will over time be shown to be the Messiah, Jesus Christ (Gal. 3:16). Though Satan put into the heart of Judas to seek the death of the Savior, it only results in a “bruised heel.” It is not a deadly wound, Christ will be resurrected. In contrast the promised seed, Jesus Christ, will destroy Satan (Rev. 20:10). This promised seed came from the family line of Shem through Abraham, and through Abraham to the Jewish tribe of Judah, then from the tribe of Judah to the family of David. From the family of David it ends in Mary, the mother of Jesus. This redemptive promise to destroy the work of the devil has continued through people from all the world that have been redeemed by Jesus Christ. Revelation 5:9 tell us, “For You [Jesus] were slain, And have redeemed us to God by Your blood Out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation.” When you put your faith in Christ, you in that moment became linked to the moment there in the Garden of Eden when God made a promise to send a Redeemer from sin and sin’s father, the devil. You are now a member in the lineage of Christ, the Promised One sent by God.
Genesis 11:10-32  Shem's Descendants 10 This is the genealogy of Shem: Shem was one hundred years old, and begot Arphaxad two years after the flood. 11 After he begot Arphaxad, Shem lived five hundred years, and begot sons and daughters. 12 Arphaxad lived thirty-five years, and begot Salah. 13 After he begot Salah, Arphaxad lived four hundred and three years, and begot sons and daughters. 14 Salah lived thirty years, and begot Eber. 15 After he begot Eber, Salah lived four hundred and three years, and begot sons and daughters. 16 Eber lived thirty-four years, and begot Peleg. 17 After he begot Peleg, Eber lived four hundred and thirty years, and begot sons and daughters. 18 Peleg lived thirty years, and begot Reu. 19 After he begot Reu, Peleg lived two hundred and nine years, and begot sons and daughters. 20 Reu lived thirty-two years, and begot Serug. 21 After he begot Serug, Reu lived two hundred and seven years, and begot sons and daughters. 22 Serug lived thirty years, and begot Nahor. 23 After he begot Nahor, Serug lived two hundred years, and begot sons and daughters. 24 Nahor lived twenty-nine years, and begot Terah. 25 After he begot Terah, Nahor lived one hundred and nineteen years, and begot sons and daughters. 26 Now Terah lived seventy years, and begot Abram, Nahor, and Haran. Terah’s Descendants 27 This is the genealogy of Terah: Terah begot Abram, Nahor, and Haran. Haran begot Lot. 28 And Haran died before his father Terah in his native land, in Ur of the Chaldeans. 29 Then Abram and Nahor took wives: the name of Abram’s wife was Sarai, and the name of Nahor’s wife, Milcah, the daughter of Haran the father of Milcah and the father of Iscah. 30 But Sarai was barren; she had no child.
The Line of Shem is Followed (Verses 10-26) v. 10 Genealogy – In genealogies of the Bible there is reason to believe that sometimes a link in the sequence is left out. An example of this is in the gospel of Luke. Luke adds Cainan (Luke 3:36), who is not in this list as the son of Arphaxad and who fathered Salah. Also at times the important son will be listed first although he many not be the eldest. An example is Shem, listed first but is not the first son; that is Japheth (Gen. 5:32; 7:13). v. 27 Terah – Though he was of the “godly line” of Seth, he was himself an idolator (Josh. 24:2). Terah Produces the Father of the Jews, Abraham (v. 27-32). Abram – Would later be called Abraham, which means “the father of many nations,” the father of the Jewish nation. Nahor – Genesis 31 recounts Nahor’s idolatry. He did not accept the witness of his brother Abram, but followed the influence of his father Terah, who was also an idolator (Josh. 24:2). Haran – He was the father of Lot. Haran died – He died in Ur, leaving his son Lot to be cared for by Abram.
31 And Terah took his son Abram and his grandson Lot, the son of Haran, and his daughter-in-law Sarai, his son Abram’s wife, and they went out with them from Ur of the Chaldeans to go to the land of Canaan; and they came to Haran and dwelt there. 32 So the days of Terah were two hundred and five years, and Terah died in Haran.
Ur – This was a large city about 120 miles from Babylon. It had a large ziggurat in honor of the moon god Ur. v. 31 Terah took his son – This refers to Terah taking Abram on a journey towards Canaan because he was the recognized head of this family group. However, Terah was only responding to Abram’s call to Canaan. We are told in Acts 7:2-3 that it was Abram who received the call. Haran – This city was 600 miles from Ur on the trade route towards Canaan. Terah died – As we shall see in Genesis 12:1, it is after the death of Abram’s father that Abram receives a fresh call to go on to Canaan. .
